The Go-Giver: 5 Laws of Stratospheric Success

Many people would describe themselves as a “go-getter”, and would agree that such an individual is someone who strives for accomplishment and success – it is a person who always takes action.

I recently read a book that allowed me to shift my perspective from being a “go-getter” to a “Go-Giver”.  Many of us are familiar with the old proverb, “give and you shall receive”, yet how often is giving in the forefront of our mind?

In Bob Burg and John David Mann’s book, “The Go-Giver-A Little Story about a Powerful Business Idea” a business person named Joe, is offered a shift in perspective; Joe learns just how easy it is to place giving first.

Throughout the story, Joe meets different business entrepreneurs who all agree that their success stems from the “Five Laws Of Stratospheric Success.” Each of them has applied these laws in their practice, and take great pride in explaining them to this young, eager man.

Though the book focuses primarily on business, I was able to extrapolate the principles into my personal life, and am already grateful for what it is teaching me…

Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value, than what you take in payment.
Do you remember a time when someone in the service industry went above and beyond for you? Perhaps you were getting a massage, and the therapist gave you an extra 15 mins for free because she felt you actually needed it. Weren’t you thrilled? You likely even tipped her more because of her empathy. That is what the law of value suggests… adding value to others’ lives will add more value to your own.

The Second Law: The Law Of Compensation
Your income is determined by how many people you serve, and how well you serve them.
In our daily actions, we must try our best to impact positively those we serve. It suggests helping as many people as possible with whatever gifts you have been given. Giving Child a FlowerLet’s take a vocalist, for example. If she performs with conviction in front of thousands of people, her compensation will be greater than if she only performed in a small coffee shop. Reach more people and you will increase your compensation.

The Third Law: The Law Of Influence
Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place others’ interests first.
On your way to your daughter’s soccer game, you forget that you were supposed to bring the snacks! When you go into the store, a kind woman sees you’re in a hurry and lets you go ahead of her in the long line. Without her, you would not have made the game on time. Later, you reflect on how grateful you were for her generosity. That woman left an influence on you because she placed your interests before her own.

The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself.
This law is my personal favourite. Why? Because it is so beautifully simple. To be authentic, you must be present in mind, body and spirit. Genuinely listen when someone is speaking to you. Put down your iPhone and make eye contact with them – engage and show interest in someone else. People are fascinating, and we all have so much knowledge to gain from one another if we shine authenticity and presence.

The Fifth Law: The Law of Receptivity

This concept is difficult for many people. When someone pays you a compliment, do you say “thank you”, or do you deny it and shy away? When you receive a compliment – accept it, show gratitude and notice the shift in your energy having allowed it. Some people give, give, give and wonder why they have not received. We must remain open to the notion that in offering the first four laws, with intention, we will receive in return. It is in our willingness to give.

This quick and easy read can inspire you to become a better person through your actions. These laws are universally applicable and encourage honesty, integrity, mindfulness, and awareness. It offers a new approach to those who have been feeling stuck in the hustle and bustle of this material society. It is a powerful idea that is sure to motivate in your life.
