The Mystery of Healing Hydrotherapy

What is hydrotherapy and why do most of us feel a strong pull to bask in warm water to relax and rejuvenate?  With the increasingly popular floatation tanks available, the long-time use of hot tubs, and the ancient healing hot springs that are all over the world, hydrotherapy continues to remain a popular option in the healing process, no matter the season.  Testing out its effect on your own body may change your life!

healing hydrotherapyHydrotherapy has been used to help with skin conditions, ease aches and pains, create peace of mind, and even induce an uninterrupted full night’s sleep.  Who can argue the restorative benefits of a deep and peaceful slumber?  In fact, it was this benefit that attracted me to hydrotherapy; not for myself, but for my husband.  His restlessness was affecting my sleep, and since I did not want to begin sleeping on the couch, I was motivated to find a solution! I began researching salt baths and the methods in which they work.

“Epsom” salts, named after a natural spring in Epsom, England is a magnesium sulfate compound.  The salt dissolves in the water into magnesium and sulfate and is said to absorb through the skin.  All sorts of benefits have been reported with Epsom salts, from easing the pain of fibromyalgia and arthritis, to helping with ingrown toenails.

There is another type of Magnesium compound that is said to have the same relaxing benefits as the Epsom salts; it is the magnesium chloride flakes, sourced from the Ancient Zechstein Sea.  The brand “Ancient Minerals” provides these flakes and several other magnesium products such as oils and internal supplements.  Based on customers’ testimonials, these products are quite effective!  I would recommend using any of these magnesium solutions to help with headaches, leg cramps, or overall aches.

Healing benefits of salt

Dead Sea salts, sourced from the Dead Sea in Israel, are different than the previous magnesium salts I’ve discussed.  Still containing magnesium, Dead Sea Salts also have several other naturally occurring minerals.  Once again, you can read of similar benefits to the magnesium salts, however, there are numerous claims stating using Dead Sea Salt is helpful for many skin conditions including psoriasis and eczema.  If you are trying to find relief from these ailments, then the Dead Sea Salts may be a better option for you to try!

With my own experience, I have to say that the Dead Sea salts were a hit!  My husband -who does not appreciate a bath the way I do- decided to give it a try.  I dissolved about 2 cups of the salts in his bath, and made sure his relaxation time lasted approximately 25 minutes.  I can honestly report that he woke up the next morning admitting his sleep had been peaceful and uninterrupted… fantastic!  When using the salts myself, I find that I can barely stay awake afterwards, teaching me not to have a salty bath too early in the evening.

A wonderful addition to these baths can be appropriately chosen essential oils, such as lavender or roman chamomile, or try one of our Healing Sense blends! Popular blends to try include “Meditation”Healing Scents, or “Sweet Dreams”.

We must remember that water is life, and that our bodies contain their own internal salty sea just beneath the surface.  One thing that seems to be agreed upon throughout the world is the love of hydrotherapy; there is just something so serene about submerging your body in water.

I strongly believe that all of these salts do have the ability to heal, based on my own experience and the stories of others.  Give it a try to find out for yourself!
