5 Thoughtful Gifts that Aren’t “Things”

We’ve all been there, Christmas is approaching fast and you have your “to buy for” list of friends and family, all crossed off except for a few names. You’ve hummed and hawed, bought and returned, shopped and then stopped, because they are IMPOSSIBLE to buy for. Maybe you’re stuck because they are one of those people who already have everything, maybe you know they’re trying to downsize their life and a material gift would almost be a burden, or maybe it all boils down to them just not being materialistic. No matter what the issue is, here are a list of five ideas that are not “things”, rather, gestures you can do as gifts for them.

The gift of music is always a safe bet. It can instil all types of feelings in individuals and is something that everyone enjoys. This is more than just a gift, it’s a whole experience you and your loved one can have together. Sure, presenting them with tickets is fine, but try getting a little more creative. An idea would be tucking the tickets inside the artist’s C.D., they’ll be happy with the just the C.D. and then thrilled when they open it up!

2) Donate to a Charity in Their Name

This gesture truly is a “feel good” gift for everyone and perfect for that person who has it all. The key to making this gift extra special is finding a charity that aligns with the recipient’s values. Are they a pet lover? Do they have a certain illness that impacts them or someone they love? Do they have a soft spot for seniors or children? If you’re feeling stuck here’s a list of local charities to explore!

3) Make A Meal For Themmake a meal for them

Want to show someone you really know them? Make a meal for the two of you to enjoy together. This meal can incorporate the foods you know they love or that hold memories for you both. The act of working for hours on a dinner and dessert allows them to feel loved and appreciated by you. Cheers to that!

Tip* Invite them to your place so they don’t have to stress about hosting you.

4) Pamper Them With a Spa Treatment

Have a busy body on your list? Give them the gift they would never give themselves; moments of stillness and absolute relaxation. For those people that are on the go all the time, an hour or two of total disconnect from their to-do list can recharge and rejuvenate them more than they imagined. 5) A Gift of Service

A gift of service simply means to do something for someone. These can vary from small to large tasks. Maybe there’s something they’ve been talking about doing forever, like cleaning out their garage or doing house renovations. This is where your service could be of use! Normally, people would decline your offer to help but since you would be giving it has a christmas gift, they wouldn’t feel so bad and take it! This gift can take a lot of burden off someone. Knowing that you’re willing to help them with a task or two can keep them motivated. Feeling extra generous? make a whole booklet of I.O.U.’S! These can include things like doing the dishes, gassing up vehicles, cleaning out cars, making dinners, doing laundry, etc.

Although these individuals seem tricky, they really do teach us the true spirit of the season; it’s not about gifts, it’s about taking the time and energy to present them with something thoughtful and from the heart. These gifts do not create more clutter or collect dust. Rather, they allow for moments of bonding, connection, and gratitude for a special relationship.
